So how do you define "Glory"?

The AJ Thomas said...

Rob - yea, I was going to follow that up but I never got around to it. I think the word is too broad (and the bible heads agree) to boil it down to a few words but... The simplest I can get it is:

Glory in a secular sense has to do with credit, majesty, etc. For example you could say this add gives glory to Maxwell

Glory in reference to God is "the obviousness of his presence". It's the "weight", the majesty, the manifestation of the fact that he is here.

In the OT that looked like fire and smoke and earthquakes.

In Jesus it looks like love, power, and sacrifice

In the believer it looks like any thing we do or say that draws attention to, reflects, or gives praise to Him thus making him and his presence obvious. Glorifying God is living in such a way that when people look at our lives they see God because his presence, power, and love are obvious in our lives.

Makes the Jew sick?! Why? Becuase Jesus wouldn't do that? Bull. By every means available would I open the doors of my church. I'm not just standing up because they're my home church either. I think what they're doing is working. Though I did think it was pretty funny that childcare is not provided for this "unique event". AJ's intent was probably to playfully mock and I'm all for that. We've brought it on ourselves but I'd like to hear people's actual problem with that event.

Well Johnny, I once read one of J.M.'s books and implemented his prescription for how to get people to like me and I darn near lost the few friends I did have. That's my only problem with the whole thing, a bitter grudge I hold from my adolescence.

meh. JM's a nice guy. He certainly has some good things to say, but the reality is that he is not a PoMo and most of his teachings are not aimed at PoMo's. Sort of a "what's god for the goose is not always what's good for the gander".

I think that JM has some great principles but we as a generation first neat to learn how to read and listen critically. To often we throw the baby out with the bath water (why yes, I do like outdated cliches, thank you for noticing) and when someone says or writes something we don't agree with or think applies to us in our current situation we think they are outdated.

Of course, part of the anti-JM that's on here (and out there) I think just comes from our gen's anti-establishment attitude. It's not "hip" to like things that carry with them a big helping of commercialization and methodicalness and so we something like JM with his "21 steps to be great leader" and we get all worked up.

Anyway, my response to this is if you've read JM and don't like him, that's cool, try to hone in on some principles that he shares that are helpful (they are there trust me) and move on. If you haven't read his stuff, shut up and stop commenting, and if you want to bash a church that's trying to attract moderns by using a modern oriented NY Times best seller, try putting yourself in their place with their goals and demographic in mind.

Just for the record, I'm not anti jm incase there was any misunderstanding. I'm still working on my sense of humor...

our church hosts "Maximum Impact" every year which is a conference put together by Injoy--Maxwell's corporation. It attracts a good number of (paying) business people from around the community and is a good event for us to put on. I normally find Maxwell's session on the program the least helpful, but I ALWAYS find a few of the other speakers really helpful and inspiring. One of the things I really love about Maxwell (and Hybels) is that in their productions, they include people NOT like them (e.g., Andy Stanley).

I meant that in a good way. I think Maxwell is comfortable being who he is but knows he won't hit everyone and surrounds himself with people who will impact others he won't.

I think it's hilarious how focused this conversation has been on John Maxwell. With a few minor exceptions that has been the topic of conversation.

I'm not ready to share my thoughts on the whole piece but I will say people having in issue with Maxwell speaking there surprises me.
